President Donald Trump ordered all federal agencies to stop using Anthropic on Friday, announcing it on Truth Social shortly before the Pentagon’s deadline for the AI startup to remove military usage restrictions on its Claude AI model.
Trump wrote his social truth, “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL NEVER ALLOW A RADICAL LEFT, WOKE COMPANY TO DICTATE HOW OUR GREAT MILITARY FIGHTS AND WINS WARS! That decision belongs to YOUR COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF, and the tremendous leaders I appoint to run our Military.
The Leftwing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the Department of War, and force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution. Their selfishness is putting AMERICAN LIVES at risk, our Troops in danger, and our National Security in JEOPARDY.
Therefore, I am directing EVERY Federal Agency in the United States Government to IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology. We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again! There will be a Six Month phase out period for Agencies like the Department of War who are using Anthropic’s products, at various levels. Anthropic better get their act together, and be helpful during this phase out period, or I will use the Full Power of the Presidency to make them comply, with major civil and criminal consequences to follow.
WE will decide the fate of our Country — NOT some out-of-control, Radical Left AI company run by people who have no idea what the real World is all about. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
“In conjunction with the President’s directive for the Federal Government to cease all use of Anthropic’s technology, I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a Supply Chain Risk to National Security,” Hegseth wrote.

Anthropic criticized the designation, calling it “legally unsound” and a risky precedent for companies negotiating with the government. They emphasized that a supply chain risk designation under 10 USC 3252 applies only to Claude’s use in DoW contracts, not for other customers.
The company said in a statement late Friday that it would challenge any attempt by the administration to label it a risk to the government’s supply chain. “No amount of intimidation or punishment from the Department of War will change our position on mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons,” Anthropic wrote, using the administration’s preferred name for the Defense Department.
Anthropic was the first AI company to use models on U.S. classified networks under a $200 million contract since June 2024. Negotiations between the two parties failed, leading the Pentagon to give Anthropic an ultimatum: comply by 5:01 PM ET on Friday or face blacklisting.
