Malwarebytes has confirmed that the stolen database is being sold on dark web marketplaces, allowing cybercriminals worldwide to access it.
The leaked data has caused real issues, as many users report getting genuine Instagram password reset notifications, showing that attackers are trying to take over accounts. Revealing email addresses and phone numbers tied to Instagram accounts opens the door for targeted phishing scams.

Instagram screenshots show a dark web listing for a significant data leak of 17.5 million users from late 2024, which includes usernames, emails, phone numbers, and partial locations gathered globally. This coincides with Malwarebytes’ recent warning about ongoing exploitation, including password reset attempts on affected accounts.
The seller named “Subkek” states that the data was recently collected in the last three months of 2024 through public APIs and local sources. The exposed information includes usernames, full email addresses, phone numbers, and partial addresses, with sample records provided in the listings.

Users who think their accounts might be compromised should enable two-factor authentication, use strong and unique passwords, and watch out for suspicious emails or messages pretending to be from Instagram.
