Cyberattacks increase 105% in third quarter of 2024 in Bangladesh

Bangladesh faced a 105% rise in cyber incidents from the second to the third quarter of 2024, making it one of the countries with the fastest increase in cyberattacks. It ranks second after Japan (108%) and is closely followed by France (130%), underscoring significant cybersecurity challenges.

The “Quarterly Threat Intelligence Report: Cyber Attacks in Q3 2024” shows that Bangladesh experienced 337 cyber incidents in Q3, up from 164 in Q2. This increase indicates rising threats against government institutions, businesses, and critical infrastructure. As attacks become more frequent and advanced, there’s an urgent need for improved security measures in Bangladesh.

The report reveals a global increase in disruption-focused cyberattacks, with Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) incidents being the most common threat, making up 39.9% of all reported cases in Q3.

This indicates a shift in attack strategies from data theft to operational disruption. Such trends pose significant risks to essential services and critical infrastructure in Bangladesh, as these attacks can quickly immobilize operations and expose organizations to further harm.

DDoS attacks are prevalent, but data breaches and ransomware also significantly affect organizations worldwide. Attackers are taking advantage of security weaknesses, particularly in complex networks and remote work scenarios. The rise of cloud services and hybrid work models increases vulnerabilities that cybercriminals readily exploit.

Bangladesh faces a significant rise in cyber incidents and must prioritize cybersecurity. The increase in attacks highlights the need for strategic investments, especially during the country’s digital transformation. Experts urge greater collaboration between the government and private sector, along with educational campaigns for businesses and individuals on proactive security measures.
