Cyberattacks are increasing, and in the past decade, notable attacks like the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack, SolarWinds hack, and Microsoft Exchange hack have occurred. These incidents highlight the importance of people being alert to cybersecurity risks and taking precautions to safeguard themselves.

In 2023, To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, CISA has launched an awareness campaign. The campaign promotes four simple but effective techniques that anyone can use to enhance their internet security.

Be Cybersmart:
Make smart choices online to protect yourself from cyber threats.

Use Strong Passwords:
Create and use strong passwords to keep your accounts safe.

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication:
Add an extra layer of security to your accounts by enabling multifactor authentication.

Keep Your Software Up to Date:
Install software updates as soon as they are available to patch known vulnerabilities.

By following these four simple steps, you can help to protect yourself and your loved ones from cyberattacks.

Cybersecurity Data by Getastra reveals that there is an attack every 39 seconds. This adds up to approximately 2,200 attacks per day. A data breach can cost an average of US$9.44 million in damages. The University of North Georgia’s report predicts that cybercrime will reach US$8 trillion globally by 2023. These statistics emphasize the urgent need for a strong cybersecurity awareness culture and serve as a reminder of the ongoing risks organizations face.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2023:

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a campaign initiated by the US Department of Homeland Security. It aims to raise public awareness about cybersecurity.

This important program has two goals: to show the best practices for cybersecurity and to emphasize the importance of collaboration in stopping cyberattacks and scams.

In 2004, US President George W. Bush declared October as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This initiative was created to raise awareness about cybersecurity, and involves collaboration between the public, private sectors, and tribal communities.

Purpose:
The importance of cybersecurity awareness is highlighted during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. It educates people and organizations about emerging threats, best practices, and the importance of protecting sensitive data. This helps them defend against cyberattacks.
