A mysterious AI model dubbed “Ox Alpha” has surfaced online and created noise within the developer community after releasing on OpenRouter as a free. “stealth model” aimed at coding, long-running AI agents, and production workloads. The identity of its developer remains undisclosed until now.
Ox Alpha came out on OpenRouter on August 20, 2026, saying it can give up to 100 trillion free tokens each day. This model is designed for long-term software tasks, complex thinking, and workflows that use text, images, and video as inputs.

It gives back text and allows for function calling, picking tools, and structured JSON-style answers. The model’s size and free access have quickly led to questions.
OpenRouter shows a model with a context window of 1,048,576 tokens and allows for completions up to 131,072 tokens. This ability could make it appealing to developers creating coding tools that need to look at large code bases, carry out multi-step tasks, and work over long sessions.
Ox Alpha is not run by OpenRouter. The platform states it sends requests to a third-party provider that wants to stay unknown during the preview. It also warns that this provider keeps prompts and completions, but they are not used for training the model.
New Mysterious AI model Dubbed Ox Alpha
Unsurprisingly, much of the speculation has revolved around China. AI analyst Andrew Curran posted on Friday that the initial speculation focused on the GLM models developed by Chinese company Z.ai, but “this morning people seem less sure of anything.”
Similarly, an article on Wccftech first suggested that the evidence pointed to GLM, but an update suggested that Ox Alpha could be an unreleased version of Microsoft’s MAI. And on Reddit, there’s at least one post declaring that Ox Alpha “can’t be the Chinese,” while another expressed “high confidence” that it is, in fact, Chinese.
According to TechCrunch, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison called Ox Alpha “very impressive” after its launch, drawing attention amid Stripe’s reported acquisition of OpenRouter to gain deeper insight into AI model usage and token spending.
OpenRouter has said its product and existing commitments will remain unchanged following the transaction. For coders, Ox Alpha may provide a powerful no-cost testing option for code generation, debugging, repository analysis, and agentic workflows.
The model’s unclear ownership and rules on keeping prompts can cause security issues. Until the provider shows who they are and shares better transparency, organizations should see Ox Alpha as an outside, unverified AI service. Use clean test data, do not upload sensitive code, and follow the same risk checks as for any new AI tool.
