Launched in July 2023, the new US Cyber Trust Mark allows smart devices from participating vendors to showcase their cyber resilience through the prominent display of the Cyber Trust Mark logo.
“Americans have many ‘smart’ wireless interconnected devices in their homes, from baby monitors to home security cameras to voice-activated assistants. These devices are part of Americans’ daily lives,” said a release by the White House.
“”But many Americans are concerned about criminals hacking into home security systems to unlock doors or attacking insecure home cameras to record conversations without permission.”
“The White House launched this bipartisan effort to educate American consumers and give them an easy way to assess the cyber security of such products, as well as incentivise companies to produce more cyber secure devices, much as EnergyStar labels did for energy efficiency.”
Some companies involved in the initiative are Google, Amazon, Best Buy, Logitech, Samsung, and LG.
“We see great potential in the US Cyber Trust Mark Program. It is a positive step forward for consumers, and we are excited about the opportunity to highlight this program for our customers,” said Best Buy senior director, head of enterprise privacy and data protection, Michael Dolan.
Manufacturers must meet specific cybersecurity criteria from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to display the Cyber Trust Mark.
Criteria will include data protection, software updates, cyber incident detection, strong default passwords, and more.
“Amazon supports the US Cyber Trust Mark’s goal to strengthen consumer trust in connected devices. We believe consumers will value seeing the US Cyber Trust Mark both on product packaging and while shopping online,” said Amazon vice president Steve Downer.
“We look forward to collaborating with industry partners and the government on consumer education efforts and implementation strategies.”
