Intel holds 22 employees from one Bangladeshi University

Intel Corporation is a leading semiconductor chip manufacturer, employing at least 22 graduates from the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Dhaka University, with 9 at its headquarters. Their presence is due not only to individual skills and hard work but also to the department’s robust curriculum, research opportunities, and supportive alumni network.

Tahmina Akhter is a senior engineer at Intel Corporation. Her passion for chemistry began in high school at Dhaka City College, leading her to study Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Dhaka University. She found her classes enjoyable and chose semiconductor materials for her PhD research, crediting her department with significantly impacting her life.

She said, ‘While studying at the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Dhaka University, I got the opportunity to learn various subjects in depth. Starting from the concepts of chemical processes and materials science, analytical thinking skills have been developed since graduation. This diverse experience of learning various subjects has helped me to understand the complexities of semiconductor manufacturing processes and data analysis. All these have been useful at every stage of my career.’

At least 22 people from the same department secured jobs at renowned organizations, and Tahmina recognized this wasn’t a coincidence. She said, ‘The alumni network of our department is quite good. I can say from my own perspective, all my juniors who came to study here after joining here have contacted me, I have advised them. The curriculum of our department has also made the path a lot easier. In addition to theoretical subjects, we do a lot of work in the lab, which has helped us a lot in reaching this stage.’

To work at Intel Corporation, one must understand semiconductor manufacturing and data analysis. Muhammad Saddam Hossain is currently a process engineer there.

He said, ‘My doctoral research was on semiconductor materials, so I was interested in working on the development of next-generation semiconductor chips. Intel gave me that opportunity.’ However, getting the opportunity was not very easy. Because semiconductor production is considered one of the most advanced and complex production processes.

Intel prioritizes candidates who can recognize and address complex challenges in semiconductor development. Saddam Hossain has successfully navigated these challenges to reach his current position.

Maksudur Rahman believes that Intel’s work environment is very supportive. He is currently a process engineer. He said, ‘Intel’s work culture is truly amazing. Managers and colleagues are always there to help. They are always there to help you solve any complex problem. Here you will get the opportunity to work with various types of professionals, such as technicians, shift engineers, process engineers, manufacturing engineers. This experience will help you understand the complex process of chip manufacturing and help you acquire the skills to solve problems.’

In Bangladesh, why number of women in cyber security domain are less?

Challenges and Opportunities:

Hasan Ul Iqbal is an integration engineer who faced various challenges at Intel, which he found to be valuable lessons for his career. Initially, he struggled with frequent communication in Intel’s fast-paced environment, but he eventually overcame this issue through experience.

Hasan said, ‘The semiconductor industry will play a big role in the world economy and politics in the next few decades.’ He wants to go to the top in this industry and also contribute to improving the semiconductor industry in Bangladesh.

He said, ‘Bangladesh is not ready yet. However, I believe that our country has good potential in chip designing, advanced packaging and other technical aspects. If the youth of Bangladesh want to, they can do well in the semiconductor industry. I want to help them.’

I wanted to know from some of these young people what advice they would give to those who want to work in the semiconductor industry.

Saddam Hossain said, “To work in a world-class company like Intel, students need to build a strong foundation in relevant technical fields. Gaining hands-on experience through internships and various projects, keeping up-to-date with the industry, these are also essential. Along with improving analytical skills, problem-solving and communication skills, a passion for innovation will help you stand out.”

Tahmina Akhter advised to always be eager to learn. She said, “You should always focus on improving your skills. You should improve your research skills, gain experience in problem-solving. Learn important topics like semiconductor manufacturing, data analysis, these skills are very necessary for working in artificial intelligence and technology sectors. Also, develop networking and communication skills.
