INTERPOL biometric tool to capture most wanted criminals

INTERPOL, the world’s largest international police organization unveiled its new enhanced BioHub. This system, powered by IDEMIA’s advanced multibiometric identification system (MBIS), is expected to transform global law enforcement capabilities.

MBIS 5 is the latest version, released in October 2023. It has new algorithms that improve matching accuracy, reduce response times, and have a user-friendly interface. This version focuses on enhancing the identification of potential Persons of Interest (POIs) in police investigations, improving investigative processes.

Expanding border security with advanced biometrics:

The next phase of deployment, which will happen in the next two years, will expand the system to include border control points. This expansion will allow the system to conduct up to 1 million forensic searches daily, such as fingerprints, palm prints, and portraits. This will make it the leading automated biometric identification system in the market, demonstrating its strong ability to improve border security.

IDEMIA is a leader in biometric technology and has consistently ranked highly in identity and security technology. They excel in critical areas such as iris, fingerprint, and face recognition. The latest test results from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) demonstrate IDEMIA’s exceptional expertise and efficient solutions, which are both accurate and fair.

The BioHub is a system that combines INTERPOL’s fingerprint and facial recognition databases with a matching system developed by IDEMIA. It is important for border screenings and police operations. The BioHub will be implemented at border points and provided to frontline officers over the next two years. It is expected to conduct up to 1 million forensic searches every day.

The BioHub is an improvement over past checks on INTERPOL’s biometric databases. Before, there were multiple steps and human involvement. Now, officers can use a single interface that quickly gives results and allows monitoring of requests. INTERPOL’s forensic experts only review data when the quality is not good enough, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

The BioHub follows INTERPOL’s strict data protection rules. Biometric data used for searches is not added to criminal databases, not visible to others, and any unused data is deleted after investigation, protecting privacy and data integrity.

The Biometric Hub, initially introduced to INTERPOL members at a conference in Singapore, was launched in October and is now available to all 196 member countries. This worldwide access represents a significant advancement in improving global security and law enforcement effectiveness.

INTERPOL is an international organization with 196 member nations. It helps countries work together to fight crime and make the world safer. INTERPOL has advanced technology and resources to deal with the complex challenges of crime in today’s world.

Facial recognition technology has improved and is now used for identifying people and solving crimes. INTERPOL adopted IDEMIA’s facial recognition capabilities in 2016 to create the INTERPOL face recognition system (IFRS). The IFRS has helped identify terrorists, criminals, fugitives, persons of interest, and missing individuals from over 170 countries. In 2019, INTERPOL extended its agreement with IDEMIA to upgrade the IFRS to an MBIS.
