India’s Bharti Airtel has launched India’s first AI-powered solution that detects spam calls and messages, alerting customers in real-time. The free service automatically activates for all users, detecting millions of spam messages daily to improve customer security.
Airtel announces a free tool that will automatically alert customers in real-time about suspected spam calls and SMSes. It will be activated for all customers without needing a service request or app download.
“Spam has become a menace for customers. We have spent the last twelve months to solve this comprehensively,” Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Bharti Airtel, said.
“Designed as a dual-layer protection, the solution has two filters – one at the network layer and the second at the IT systems layer. Every call and SMS passes through this dual-layered AI shield. In 2 milliseconds our solution processes 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls every day. This is equivalent to processing 1 trillion records on a real time basis using the power of AI. Our solution has been able to successfully identify 100 million potential spam calls and 3 million spam SMSes originating every day. For us, keeping our customers secure is a burning priority,” Vittal added.
Airtel’s data scientists created an AI solution that uses a unique algorithm to identify and classify calls and SMS as “Suspected SPAM.” The telecom operator said that its system accurately flags spam calls and SMS.
Airtel’s solution alerts customers about malicious SMS links by using a central database of blacklisted URLs. Every SMS is scanned in real-time by an AI algorithm to warn users against clicking suspicious links.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has ordered all service providers to block voice promotional calls from unregistered senders or telemarketers to reduce spam calls.
“The solution can also detect anomalies such as frequent IMEI changes – a typical indicator of fraudulent behavior. By layering these protective measures, the company is ensuring its customers receive maximum level of defense against the evolving landscape of spam and fraud threats,” the company said.
The Government of India has introduced 10-digit numbers starting with 160 for service and transactional calls. Customers may receive calls from banks, mutual funds, insurance companies, stockbrokers, and various businesses using these numbers. Those who haven’t opted for Do Not Disturb (DND) and wish to receive promotional calls will still receive calls from numbers starting with 140.
