Cyber attack at Japanese telecom leader NTT hits 18,000 companies

NTT Communications Corporation discovered illegal access to its facilities on February 5 and confirmed on February 6 that some information may have been leaked.

An internal investigation revealed that some corporate customer service information from Order Information Distribution System may have been leaked. However, individual customer service information was not affected.

Measures began on February 5th, and steps to block illegally accessed devices were taken on February 15th.

NTT is contacting affected customers based on when the issues occurred. So far, there are no confirmed cases of unauthorized use of customer information.

NTT sincerely apologizes to our customers and everyone affected for the inconvenience and concern.

How the unauthorized access was discovered:

On February 5th, NTT Information Security Department found suspicious logs related to device A in the internal order information distribution system. They quickly took steps the same day to limit access to device A.

NTT conducted a thorough investigation and analyzed the communication logs for Device A and related systems. On February 6th, They discovered a potential leak of information from the order information distribution system.

NTT found unauthorized access to device B on the internal network on February 15th and blocked it from the network that same day.

Impact on Customers:

At this time, the information that is known to have been potentially leaked is as follows. Customers who may have been affected by this incident will be notified by the sales staff or by letter in due course. NTT said they will not be sending out emails regarding this matter.

Services for some corporate customers
*Smartphone and mobile phone contracts under corporate names provided by NTT Docomo Inc. are not eligible.

Potentially exposed information:
Contract number, customer name (contract name), name of customer contact, telephone number, email address, address, information related to service use

Future Actions:

NTT said, they will continue to strengthen our security measures and monitoring systems to prevent recurrence and strive to further improve the quality of our services.
